The ASC Exascale Workshop, "From Petascale to Exascale: R&D Challenges for HPC Simulation Environments," was held in San Francisco at The Sir Francis Drake Hotel from March 22–24, 2011. The workshop was sponsored by Robert Meisner and Thuc Hoang, Advanced Simulation and Computing, National Nuclear Security Administration, U.S. Department of Energy. Attendees included representatives of HPC programs from U.S. government agencies, national laboratories, industry, and universities. The purpose of the workshop was to begin a dialogue with the external community on DOE high performance computing (HPC) research and development challenges as the DOE NNSA and Office of Science partnership moves beyond petascale to new exascale models of computing.
